As the second oldest bicycle fitting system in the world, at BikeFit we’re passionate about making cycling enjoyable whether you’re riding a $500 or $10,000 bicycle. While most bikes are technically sound, improper positioning on the bike can result in a disappointing ride. Proper fitting ensures maximum comfort and a great ride with superior power/wattage.  Anything less means riding with sore/numb hands, feet, derriere and inefficient performance. 1. Foot Pedal Interface

The goal of the “BikeFit: The Foot-Pedal Interface” is to develop the process of clinical assessment and adjustment of the cleat as it relates to lower extremity biomechanics of cycling. Humans are asymmetrical creatures. Yet bikes & pedal systems are designed symmetrically which inherently creates biomechanical challenges for the lower extremities. This course tackles the most crucial, and often misunderstood, connection point on the bike: the foot/pedal interface.

2. Fore-Aft

This section looks at the lateral view of the cyclist’s foot. The clinician will begin to understand where the foot should be positioned over the pedal in the fore-aft position, how this is assessed and, most importantly, how to make the proper cleat fore-aft adjustment. Considerations to accommodate cleat adjustments beyond typical shoe/cleat range will also be discussed.

3. Medial-Lateral

In this section, the clinician will assess the front view of the cyclist. They will understand the relationship between the position/motion of the knee related to the foot. They will identify and go through the appropriate cleat adaptation to bring the foot under the knee including options for lateral positioning beyond the typical capabilities of cleat adjustment on the shoe.

4. Wedging

In this section, the clinician will identify and see accommodations for the cyclist’s individual architecture including forefoot/rear foot varus and additional causes for valgus forces moving through the lower extremities. They will begin to understand the types of wedges used to adjust the cleat and/or foot into the proper angle to improve pedaling mechanics.

5. Rotation

In this section, the clinician will gain a greater understanding of rotation and float for common pedal systems. The clinician will assess the amount of rotation the cyclist has while clipped into the bike pedal and learn to assess the necessary adjustments to allow for appropriate float in order to avoid frictional torsion between the tibia and fibula.

6. Leg Length

In this section, the clinician will discuss the difference between a structural and functional leg length difference. They will observe what a cyclist with a leg length difference may present. Discussion regarding types of shimming and techniques used to compensation for a leg length discrepancy will be explained

Research conducted on cyclist’s feet showed that 96% of us have forefeet that are canted or tilted up to the inside inward (“varus”) or outward toward the outside (“valgus”).  The vast majority (87%) of cyclist’s feet tilt up to the inside.  Unfortunately, almost all cycling shoes, cleats and pedals take this natural tilt and force it flat.  This can generate knee pain, create a foot “hotspot” (where the inner or outer side of the foot feels hot) and diminish your ability to generate power.
Cleat Wedges® enable the cycling shoe to connect with the pedal naturally, by acknowledging the foot’s inherent angle.  This creates a neutral foot position throughout the pedaling cycle, resulting in greater comfort and power.   An illustration depicting foot and knee alignment before and after applying Cleat Wedges can be seen here.
Cleat Wedges are often used in conjunction with ITS Wedges® (in-the-shoe) which provide 1.5 degree of inward canting in cycling shoes that have ample room in the forefoot area. ITS Wedges can also be used to quickly determine if inward or outward forefoot tilt or canting exists.
For a 1mm leg length discrepancy (one leg is shorter than the other), we recommend “stacking” two (2) Cleat Wedges, placing two wedges on top of the each other with the thicker edges of the wedges opposite each other.  For larger leg length discrepancies we recommend using Leg Length Shims.

Why Use In the Shoe Wedges?

In the Shoe (ITS) Wedges® provide 1.5 degree of inward angulation (aka “varus”) in cycling shoes that have ample room in the forefoot area. They are often used in conjunction with Cleat Wedges® or as a quick way of determining if inward or outward forefoot tilt or canting exists.
As an alternative to ITS Wedges some people solely rely on Cleat Wedges which are placed between the cycling shoe and cleat.

Why Use Leg Length Shims?
Leg Length Shims (LL Shims) are used to compensate for leg length discrepancies (one leg is shorter than the other). Our LL Shims are made of high-density plastic to conform to the curve of the sole of the shoe.  The SPD, Universal and Look Keo LL Shims are 3 mm thick while Speedplay’s LL Shims are 3.5 mm thick.
For a 1 mm leg length discrepancy, we recommend “stacking” two (2) Cleat Wedges. To create a stack place two Cleat Wedges one on top of the other with the thicker edges of the wedges opposite each other.

Why Use Pedal Spacers?
Not every cyclist’s feet stance width – the distance between the inside of the feet – aligns exactly to the distance dictated by the left pedal axle, left crank arm, bottom bracket, right crank arm and right pedal axle.  For these athletes, pedal spacers, and some pedals with variable length axles, are the answer.
We offer 20 mm Pedal Spacers to everyone.  For cyclists with smaller stance width needs, we recommend using one or two 1 mm pedal spacer washers, sold in bulk to our BikeFit Pros/Dealers.  They also have the screws mentioned in the menu.

BikeFit’s Fitting Tools are typically utilized by our BikeFit Professionals, Physical Therapists, Podiatrists, and Physicians who work with cyclists.

The Cleat Screw Kit is a Bike Fit Pro’s best friend because it eliminates the difficulty (and in some cases impossibility) of finding the perfect type and length of cleat screw.  For example, our Speedplay screws have Loctite® to help prevent them from coming loose.
